Course Purpose
The goal of this course is to highlight practice issues related to the work with at-risk children. The course will help students to identify factors that create at-risk conditions, frameworks, and social interventions to strengthen their social practice. Emphasis on a human rights-based approach will be taken into consideration, as well as a child-centered perspective, strengths-based practice, and the use of resilience-focused theories. After this course, the student will be able to use critical thinking and make important decisions regarding some of the most common children’s needs and social problems.
It is expected that the student engages in a deep reflection process through cases and scientific readings. The student will acquire the capacity to integrate different evident-based approaches. It is encouraged collaboration and teamwork to learn about what it means to be a part of an interdisciplinary team in the field.
Educational Objectives
Identify a social problem and when a child is at-risk.
Understand how social services for children work in Catalonia.
Knowledge of a human rights-based legal framework to advocate for children’s needs.
Recognize child-centered services and programs.
Expanded ability to detect different typologies of child abuse and neglect.
Prevent child sexual abuse.
Articulate when a child is exposed to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), the impact, and children’s patterns of adjustment.
Analyze protective and risk factors associated with child at-risk cases, while using an ecological perspective.
Critical thinking to engage in a constructive decision-making process when working in the Child Protection System.
The ability to describe what trauma is and how to build trauma-informed policies in the school context.
Awareness of positive after-school and violence prevention programs for children at-risk.
Gather knowledge on bullying emphasizing empowerment and intersectionality approaches.
Knowledge of natural mentoring intervention when working with older youth aging out of the foster care system.

L’objectiu principal de l’assignatura és poder treballar la sexualitat tenint en compte els contextos clínics i sociosanitaris de forma transversal, adquirint així coneixements i eines bàsiques per un abordatge integral. Es treballa la sexualitat positiva, tenint en compte els models basats en el benestar sexual i la resiliència. Es treballarà el diagnòstic i el tractament clínic però es dóna especial èmfasis a pràctica del Counseling en diferents processos vitals. L’assignatura utilitza el marc biopsicosocial-espiritual i la perspectiva basada en les fortaleses. Es té en compte el model centrat en la persona i la perspectiva de gènere. Es treballaran les competències bàsiques del psicòleg en l’àmbit de la sexualitat i la salut (no jutjar, actitud empàtica, oberta, la pròpia identiat com a terapeuta etc...)
